The sunset at 6:28 PM, just about the time Team 14 was pulling into Tanana…..there were only 12 teams in town, but by the time I hit the upload button….all remaining 2016 Pro Class racers will be bedded down in TANANA!!!!!
The race started with 41 teams……the board has rattled 16 teams into the Scratch category…..today forced three teams to throw in the towel, struggling to keep equipment in working order and parts not where they were needed…..frustrating for sure.….it is a lot to overcome when logistics becomes an equal partner…..certainly not fair!!!!
The top 3 line up order hasn’t changed much….. since the first checkpoint Skwentna last Sunday….oh sure a few minutes gained and some lost, the order is exactly the same Team 8, Team 6 and Team 16 2,000 miles of Grand RACING!!!! There is 291 miles to go, some might say they will come in on cruise control…..but since the times are so close between Team 6 and 16 the race to watch tomorrow will be the GPS pings that will keep us informed on what is happening on THREE RIVERS STADIUM…..Tanana, Nenena and Chena here they come….
The last run to the finish line has consistently been 4.5 hours…..racers still have to run a clean event…..many an Iron Dog has ended for teams just miles from the finish line…….which I think is the ultimate in unfairness…..so the goal on Saturday morning is protect the machines!!!!
The temperatures have been mild mild mild…..I remember days when race week was as cold as -35 on the river at 7 AM it looks like tomorrow it will be +35…..racers won’t be happy….their preference being cooler temperatures …they claim it’s better for equipment, we know it’s better for firm snow and it usually brings out the clear sunny days ….they can’t complain about the light today….it was spectacular…..
I think you’ve heard that term “Zero to 60” a couple times before…..well TNT Team #8 just has to do that about four times tomorrow…..Tanana, Manley, Nenana and North Pole and they will have it in the bag…..a 45 minute lead will be hard for any of the teams to chomp away coming from behind….throttles will be pinned for Team 6 and 16….I don’t think polishing the bumpers is out of the question………every attempt to evade the snow dust being tossed up by the leader of that pack will be taken…watch those gps pings and before you know it — Saturday will be over and the celebrating will begin…….
No time for stories from me tomorrow….I will be glued to the Social Media that has helped bring to life our event that only a few get to see live and up close and personal. Thank you to all the fans, volunteers and cover pilots, who were able to get us incredible content almost up to the minute—it helped to create a vision for us to see…..I hope you have enjoyed the last week as much as I have….I learned a bit about myself again…..I like watching from my seat, but I love to hear the stories and meet the people that keep this great race alive and thriving…..Looking forward to a good day of racing starting at 8:00 A.M, the last team out of Tanana will be on the clock by 11:02 A.M. which gives them ample time to get to Fairbanks for the Award’s Ceremony before sunset in Fairbanks at 6:02 P.M. Saturday!!!!!
