Proof that sun improves attitude came through bright and shiny today. The general comments made by many of the racing Team Facebook pages….was upbeat!!!! TOTALLY UPBEAT!!!
The first three teams took off out of Nome in the early morning dark. The dawn light promised a clear blue sky for rest of the field on the trail by 2:15 PM this afternoon. The first of two layovers began starting with Team 8 in Kaltag upon arrival at just about 2 this afternoon….the trail miles from back of the pack to front was 362 miles…..an easy day run for everyone.
One scratch for the day on Throttle Thursday came in the early morning hours for Team 5. Hot of the Facebook press….looks like Team 26 had to be the second for today’s run….ARGH!!! They gave it a good try, but were disappointed the motor condition wasn’t fixable and called it a race!!! No new snow on the trail…..a clear blue bird day for the teams sitting in Kaltag….there were some huge triple-digit speedo numbers being posted on the GPS flags/bubbles…..and of course, the course times were faster than we saw on the way Northbound. Planes were in the air atop their teams, the data was flying on the wireless networks from teams to fans and somehow Iron Dog was able to catch some wonderful action shots from the FANTASTIC volunteers out there!!!!
Racers have cleared the checkpoints White Mountain, and it looks like there is only one team either hanging in KOY or about to take off (Scratched #26 as of 7 PM) I started typing this story about 5:30 and as I am editing the notification dings and text dings keep me from focusing…..just another moment of truth….it is difficult to keep up with this race.
The temperatures in ANC hit 45 I don’t know how that is possible as it is still February….the finish line festivities have been shuffled in Fairbanks so make sure to take a look at the website for updates and changes…..Mother Nature continues to fuss with the Iron Dog and it causes plans that have been set for months to be rather flexible…..
The teams that left Nome this afternoon may have had the prettiest day of riding so far, the pilots said they loved to fly out on a gorgeous day….I can’t help but think those racers soaked it all in and forgot about the hardwork that it took to get through Throttle Thursday according to a note posted by team 26: “And they’re out of Nome! Today’s garage work included rebuilding Ryans motor, shock swaps, swapping the rails on the skid frame, and I don’t know what else. These guys are amazing!” Unfortunately it all came to a halt and a change of plans will take them back to Nome from where they came earlier today to fly out and I hope they change their plans and get to Fairbanks to enjoy the fun that is in store up there.
There were three motors rebuilt in Nome that I know of …..I could be wrong, but that might be a record…..
First team off layover goes out of Kaltag in the wee hours of 2-26-16….Team 8 will be minding their “Ps and Qs” for sure heading to the second LO of 10 hours…..watching for the headlights of Team 6 and 16…..The Mighty Mighty Yukon will have some super sonic sound waves tonight as the “Boyz” crank out every single horsepower they have to gain some time on the smooth run from Kaltag…..they ran the course time in 2:10 minutes on Monday so look for some mighty fine racing to go on this section tonight…..heading for the busy checkpoint Galena or hope for a nice quaint stay in Ruby…..Midnight folks….the leader board will begin to rumble once more!!!!
