My name is David Schlies and I have lived in Alaska all my life. I was born in Anchorage, almost 18 years ago, but currently live in Chugiak. I go to two schools, King Career Technical School and Chugiak High.
The members of my family include my Mom who is a writer, my Dad, who works for the government and my sister, who is a junior at Chugiak High.
The scariest thing I can think of that has happened to me was when my 700 pound Steer tried to kill my seven year old cousin by running him down. I saved his life when I grabbed the rope to the steer’s halter as he was running by, and turned him so that he ran into the neighbor’s house.
I’ve spent six years in 4-H learning about agriculture. In five years I hope to be getting my own farm started here in Alaska. I have plans to go to UAF this fall for an agricultural degree. I want to own my own farm and in twenty years, I hope to be farming full time.
My favorite song is “Suliman” by Infected Mushroom. In general I really like most Techno music, trance in particular. My favorite food is prime rib, but if I have grown, raised or harvested anything I like to eat it.
I like to snowmachine in the winter, I have been since I was six and got my first little 250 for around the neighborhood. Another fun winter activity that I like to do is bow hunt. I am bow hunter certified and every year, my uncles and I go up to the North Slope and hunt caribou along the haul road. In the summer I like to ride my four-wheeler as often as I can. I also enjoy fishing for silvers and dipping for reds when they’re coming in.
If I could go to any place in the world I would want to go to Mexico, because I think it would be fun to live cheap and be in a warm climate for awhile. Germany would also be interesting because I took two years of German and the culture fascinates me. I would also like to go to the Clear Lake Rodeo with a group of friends for a graduation trip.
