ATTENTION IRON DOGGERS
The continuation of the Start from Big Lake this year will be taking a completely new route due to the Port MacKenzie railroad extension and trespass issues with the previous trail departing off the west side of the lake.
Iron Dog staff and the Race Marshals met today in Palmer with the MatSu Borough and planners working on this project. This is a preliminary announcement to alert all riders to begin looking at their departures off of Big Lake.
11 January 2015: Our Race Marshals and project engineers investigated the new trails (T5) and determined them to be unprepared for this year.
The Iron Dog course will start at Southport Marina and cross Big Lake as usual, then using the following trails:
- T1 to Intersection Marker H
- Marker H to T6
- T6 to Marker D
- T6 crossing the railroad bed
- T6 to Cow Lake
The final route from Cow Lake will be determined based on conditions leading up to the actual departure day.
Alert: Be prepared to follow this route. Ultimately, this exact course or one very similar will be enforced with Express Checkpoints at race time.
We are aware of the current issues with these new trails and working with the borough and Big Lake Trails to mitigate the problems. More snowfall will help, but until then our Race Marshals team will be scouting the areas first hand.
Stay tuned for updates.
