After a great morning at the Start on Big Lake, it didn’t take long for teams to run into some problems on the trail.
Team #16 – Hit with injury to Todd Minnick
Shortly after leaving Big Lake onto the Iron Dog trail, Todd Minnick hit a large chunk of ice and was thrown from his snowmobile at high speed. The landing was hard enough to cause severe pain and hematoma (leg or hip) that made it near impossible for him to even get up or walk. His partner Nick Olstad was immediately off of his sled rendering aid by lifting Todd from overflow then carrying him back to the lake to find a ride to the hospital.
There was a very tense period after Todd was sent to the hospital while Nick proceeded to haul both snowmachines back to the shop. Nick continued to repair the machines as family and friends waited for word from the hospital. No decision to scratch would be made as both riders dealt with the situation.
Finally, late this evening the word came in. Todd is okay. We are extremely grateful to hear that Todd is recovering at home without any signs of life threatening injuries. Sadly, the blow was so severe that the team very reluctantly made the decision to scratch their ride for 2011.
Team #9 – Out due to Mechanical issues
Citing issues with their carbides and rear suspension, Team #9 scratched near Shell Lake and had to turn back for Big Lake. This was the last of the Lower 48 teams. It’s sad to see them go so soon!
Two for now.
There are a few teams dealing with accidents and repairs from Puntilla to McGrath, but so far (as of February 20, 2011 – 11:37 p.m. AKST) there are only two officially scratched teams.
