ANCHORAGE, Alaska— Much of the Iron Dog snowmachine race’s field took mandatory 10-hour layovers Thursday on their first day out of Nome en route to the finish line in Fairbanks, as its new leaders reached Kaltag Thursday afternoon.
Race standings showed Team 10 drivers Mike Morgan and Chris Olds reaching Kaltag and declaring their layover at 3:59 p.m. The rest of the race’s top 10 teams — led by Team 17’s Marc McKenna and Dusty VanMeter, who were first into Nome Tuesday but are now in second place — took layovers at the earlier checkpoint of Unalakleet, all between Team 17’s 12:24 p.m. check-in and 4 p.m.
