It appears that a large number of teams will be making it to the halfway stop in Nome this year. Reasonably good trail conditions, cooperative weather and well prepared teams all contribute to the low number of scratched teams. In a typical Iron Dog race, if there is such as thing, the attrition rate would be closer to 30 percent by now.
Teams are racing to Nome for the halfway ceremonies, $10,000 Gold Rush Prize from Donlin Gold and repair time in the Nome City Garage. Meanwhile, family, friends and Iron Dog officials are preparing for their arrival.
On Wednesday night the halfway banquet will kick of at the Alaska National Guard Armory in downtown Nome. Come and say thanks to the Guard for their ongoing support! We even flew up Ken Peltier to add some music to our food, fun and awards ceremonies.
Special thank your to the City of Nome for providing such great support with prizes, the use of their facilities and of course their famous hospitality!
