Trail conditions update

Trail crews continue to work on clearing the Iron Dog race trail between Poorman and Ophir, where extremely heavy snow and high winds obliterated much of the trail.

Here is an update from crossing trail breaker update from Bobby Frankson, via sat phone at 7 a.m. Friday morning, Feb. 21.

“They have made it out of Foldgers Creek Delta and are about 8 miles away from Carlson Crossing cabin. From there is it approximately 27 miles to Ophir. He said they are making better time. There is supposed to be a trapper trail on the river between Carlson cabin and Ophir.

“They are soaked and tired, and said there are multiple big timber trees across the trail. They have a lot of trails that meander off course but have tried to block those with willow barriers. He said racers will have “an extremely difficult” time going through sections of the trail, but that there are workarounds between deadfall hazards.

”He plans to call back at 8 a.m. for next update.”

Iron Dog will post updates as the work continues.
