Extreme Weather Challenges Racers on the Iron Dog Trail

Iron Dog 2026 racers faced some of the toughest conditions of the race so far today as powerful winter storms pushed across Western and Northern Alaska, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and periods of near-whiteout visibility along portions of the race route.

According to the National Weather Service Fairbanks and local Alaska weather reporting, multiple storm systems moving in from the Bering Sea have produced widespread snow and gusty winds across the West Coast region, with impacts expanding inland through midweek. Wind gusts in some areas have reached 40–50 mph, creating drifting snow, reduced visibility, and difficult trail conditions for racers navigating long stretches of open terrain.

Despite the challenging weather, teams remained determined and in good spirits as they continued pushing northbound with a major milestone ahead: the Pro Class mandatory overnight layover in Kotzebue. Racers are working through demanding conditions with the goal of arriving safely in Kotzebue for the mandatory overnight layover, where they’ll rest and prepare to head back on the trail toward Nome on Tuesday morning.

The extreme conditions affected all classes, including the Ambassador Team and Expedition Team, who also battled heavy snow, strong winds, and limited visibility throughout the day. Many teams made smart decisions on the trail, prioritizing safety while navigating some of the harshest weather seen so far in Iron Dog 2026.

Race Headquarters continues to actively monitor the incoming storm system along the entire race route and remains in close communication with checkpoint crews and Race Marshals. Rider safety remains the top priority as conditions evolve.

Extreme weather is nothing new on the Iron Dog trail, and today once again highlighted the grit, resilience, and smart decision-making required to compete in the world’s longest, toughest snowmobile race.

Stay safe out there, teams! The Iron Dog community is cheering you on every mile of the trail.
